Calvert High School NJROTC named Most Outstanding Unit in Area Five for 2020. Area Five NJROTC units consists of 57 schools in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Calvert NJROTC is now competing for Most Outstanding Unit in the Nation. Their motto “Unit Before Self” has created a successful environment for the students, the unit, and the school. With over 4,500 hours of community service this year, the unit is an asset to Calvert County.

As a distinguished unit with honors, the instructors have nominations to be awarded to those seeking an appointment to the United States Military Academy, Naval Academy or Air Force Academy. Additionally, cadets have opportunities for ROTC scholarships for attendance at universities throughout the United States. Academy appointments are worth over $400,000 and ROTC scholarships are worth over $180,000. This year’s seniors have been awarded numerous scholarships including $135,000 Penn State Army ROTC, $180,000 UMBC Navy Scholarship, and $135,000 Towson Army Scholarship.

Calvert High’s NJROTC program has provided a plethora of opportunities for students, including field trips for college visits (local and out of state), STEM and flight simulator tours at Patuxent Naval Air Station, tours and cruises on naval vessels at the Naval Academy and Norfolk Naval Base, U.S. Military Academy and NYC tours, Navy football games, local baseball games, and much more. In the past four years, they have traveled to Hawaii, France, Arizona, Ohio, Alabama, California, Florida, New York, Virginia and the list goes on.

Professional leadership training and sail training opportunities are also available during summer months. They have formal training in Virginia as well as local camps to include more cadets. This summer they also have plans for the cadet staff to camp and kayak on the Shenandoah River in Virginia.
