Principal News and Notes

October 2018

Principal Steve Lucas

Hello again Cavalier family! Despite the rain and heat, school has gotten off to a great start and the familiar feeling of fall is in the air. I want to start this monthly newsletter off by thanking everyone for sending their students to school ready to learn. Students have been especially attentive so far this year, and school spirit and morale seem very high. Your contributions to this cannot be understated and we thank you for stressing the importance of school and participating in your student’s education.

The next two things I want to bring to your attention have the same letters but mean something completely different- the PSAT and the PTSA. Let’s start with the PSAT which is right around the corner (October 10). The PSAT, is short for PRACTICE SAT. This is one of the best and most economical ways your student can prepare themselves for the SAT, one of the most widely accepted college entrance exams. Each year we sign up and pay for all tenth graders to take the assessment. So, if your student is in tenth grade- don’t worry. He or she is already signed up and paid for. If your student is in ninth grade however, I highly recommend you sign them up and pay the nominal fee to have them take the assessment. I also recommend eleventh graders sign up and take the PSAT, even if they have already taken it twice. Every time the student takes the test he or she has a better chance of improving their score for the actual SAT. They can also become eligible for a National Merit Scholarship. There is still time to get signed up so please ask the front desk for a sign up form if you have not gotten one.

The PTSA on the other hand stands for Parent Teacher Student Association. This worthy organization supports teaching and learning by providing teachers and students with things like arts appreciation, and volunteering for student events like Homecoming and teacher appreciation week. They are a fantastic group of parents and students and I encourage every person in our community to join. Please click on the link on our website or the Plan of the Week to join.

Speaking of Homecoming, spirit week is scheduled for October 8-12 with our Homecoming football game on October 12 and our Homecoming dance here at school October 13th. Tickets will go on sale between October 3 and October 11 during lunch in the Atrium. Tickets will not be sold after October 11 so please get them early. Here is the remainder of the spirit week activities:

Monday:  Class Color Day
(9th Purple, 10th Orange, 11th Green, 12th Pink – staff may choose a color OR don their college gear!)
Tuesday:  Tacky Tourist/Hawaiian Day
Wednesday:  Meme/Vine/Character Day
Thursday:  Hero/Villain Day
Friday:  BLUE AND GOLD Day

I’ll close this month with reminding everyone of the invitation to help out here at school. We can always use a helping hand at the front desk, with our clubs or activities, or even during lunch. Please give Mr. Whidden a call here at school if you are interested. I thank you for reading and look forward to seeing you on campus.

Sincerely,
Steven Lucas
