Principal News and Notes

August 2018

Principal Steve Lucas

Hello again Cavalier family! I hope this message finds you well and you have embraced the opportunity to spend time together this summer. As we start the countdown to the beginning of another great school year, I wanted to take a minute and send out some greetings and information. Although we still have a solid four weeks left of our break, I would like to reflect a bit on the summer before we start thinking about our first official day of school for 2018-19, September 4.

While we have had the opportunity to relax a bit, your Cavalier leadership team has had a busy “break”. We started the summer off with our first ever “AP Boot-Camp” which was designed and implemented to help our first time AP students get a jump on next year. The students met over the course of one week to learn new study skills, collaborate with peers, forge relationships with AP teachers, and start their summer work.

We also ran our second ever “Freshman Boot-Camp” this summer. This activity was piloted last year and expanded this year to include morning and afternoon sessions. More than just an expanded orientation, the week allowed for students to start acclimating to high school while interacting with other students, teachers, and administrators. Soft skills such as collaboration and cooperation were emphasized as well as study, organization, and other executive functioning skills.

We have, of course, been busy getting our student and teacher schedules coordinated, assigning rooms, performing routine and corrective maintenance, and enhancing our skills as educators through rigorous professional development. The administrative team took part in an intense three-day workshop in July and we are anxious to get started so we can share what we’ve learned with our colleagues and students.

I would like to close this message by thanking the many of you who have taken part in the activities this summer to help prepare us for the coming school year. I would especially like to thank Mr. Harrod and the CHS Building Services team, the CCPS I.T. Department, Mr. Powers over at the Board of Education who helped get our tennis courts reconditioned, and the PTSA under the new leadership of President Tracy Fiore. Getting a school ready for the year is a huge undertaking which requires the support of many and these folks are just a few of those who have helped us get ready.

I thank you again for the privilege of leading our school. I invite you to visit often, and I wish you well.

Sincerely,
Steven Lucas
