Principal News and Notes

October 2019

Principal Steve Lucas

Hello again Cavalier family and welcome again to 2019-2020! Our first month of school for the year is in the books and we have gotten off to a great start. Our building services and support professionals did a great job getting the school ready and teachers and students are well into their routines. I want to personally thank you for sending your students back to school ready to learn and I am confident we have another great group of Cavaliers on board.

October traditionally brings up several things of importance to students and parents. First, and right around the corner on October 16, is the PSAT. This assessment, often referred to as “the most important test”, is a great opportunity for students for several reasons. First, it is an opportunity to practice taking a challenging standardized test. In fact, this is one of the best and most economical ways your student can prepare themselves for the SAT, which is one of the most widely accepted college entrance exams. Each year we sign up and pay for all tenth graders to take the assessment. So, if your student is in tenth grade- don’t worry. He or she is already signed up and paid for. If your student is in ninth grade however, I highly recommend you sign them up and pay the nominal fee. I also recommend eleventh graders sign up and take the PSAT, even if they have already taken it twice. Every time the student takes the test he or she has a better chance of improving their score for the actual SAT. They can even become eligible for a National Merit Scholarship. Contact us here at school for more information.

Homecoming is the next big October event. Spirit week is scheduled for October 14-17 with our Homecoming football game on October 18 and our Homecoming dance here at school October 19. Tickets will go on sale between October 7 and October 15 during lunch in the Atrium. Tickets will not be sold after October 15 so please get them early. Here is the remainder of the spirit week activities:

Monday:  Maryland Monday! Show your Maryland Pride.
Tuesday:  Throwback Tuesday- Throw it back to your favorite BLAST FROM THE PAST!
Wednesday:  Class Color Day (9th Purple, 10th Orange, 11th Green, 12th Pink)
Thursday:  BLUE AND GOLD Day (2 Hour Early Dismissal, Pep Rally after lunch)

The PTSO stands for Parent Teacher Student Organization and here at Calvert High School we have a great one. This worthy organization supports teaching and learning in many ways, but one of the big things the PTSO does is provide scholarships to our students. The only catch to receiving a scholarship is that the student needs to be a member of the PTSO. It is just $5 to join so please click on the link on our website or the Plan of the Week to join.

As always, I like to wrap up my monthly message by expressing gratitude for our great community and your support. It is an honor and a blessing to serve as your high school principal and I thank you. We can always use a helping hand at school so please give Mr. Whidden a call here if you are interested. I thank you for reading and look forward to seeing you on campus.
